Scheme-I (ISI Mark Scheme) Certification

Overview

The Scheme-I Certification, popularly known as the ISI Mark Scheme, is the oldest and most widely recognized certification scheme operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Under this scheme, manufacturers are granted a licence to use the ISI Mark on their products, symbolizing quality, safety, and reliability.

Scheme-I is the mandatory BIS certification scheme for a large number of products notified by various ministries of the Government of India, ensuring that only certified, safe, and reliable goods reach Indian consumers.

What is Scheme-I Certification?

  • Scheme-I, governed by the BIS Act, 2016, BIS Rules, 2018, and BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, ensures that products comply with the relevant Indian Standards (IS).
  • Products certified under Scheme-I carry the ISI Mark, which is a guarantee of consistent product quality, performance, and safety.
  • Both domestic and foreign manufacturers are eligible to apply for a licence under this scheme.

Key Objectives

  • Ensure product quality & safety for consumers.
  • Enforce mandatory compliance with Indian Standards.
  • Eliminate unsafe, counterfeit, and substandard products.
  • Provide fair market access and protect Indian industry.

  • Provide product details, specifications, and supporting documents.

2. Product Testing

  • Submit product samples to a BIS-recognized testing laboratory for conformity testing.

3. Self-Declaration of Conformity

  • Declare that the product meets applicable Indian Standards.

4. Grant of R-Number

  • Upon successful verification, BIS issues a license to use the Standard Mark.

5. Product Marking

  • Mark products with the BIS Standard Mark and unique registration number.

Documents Required

  • Application form (Form VI).
