Food Waste Disposers are covered under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025, notified by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs via S.O. 2232(E) dated 19 May 2025 under the BIS Act, 2016. The new QCO supersedes the earlier version, S.O. 4098(E), from 17 September 2024.
Overview
Food waste disposers are electrical appliances used to grind food residue and discharge it into the drainage system. These devices pose potential electrical and mechanical safety risks due to their location under sinks and their interaction with water and food particles, making certification essential.
Objective & Scope
To enhance consumer safety by ensuring all food waste disposers comply with IS 302 (Part 1):2024, which includes requirements for protection against electric shock, overload protection, moisture ingress resistance, and operational safety.
