 Veneered Decorative Plywood has been brought under mandatory certification via the Plywood and Wooden Flush Door Shutters (Quality Control) Order, 2024, notified through S.O. 1377(E) dated 15 March 2024 under the BIS Act, 2016. This Order replaces the earlier QCO 2023 (S.O. 3841(E) dated 29 August 2023).

Overview

Veneered decorative plywood consists of plywood panels surfaced with thin decorative wood veneers, commonly used in furniture, interior paneling, and cabinetry. Given its significant role in aesthetics and durability for interiors, BIS has mandated compliance to ensure consistent quality, safety, and durability.

Objective & Scope

The objective of IS 1328:1996 is to establish performance and quality benchmarks for veneered decorative plywood, including standards for bonding, veneer thickness, dimensional stability, moisture resistance, and finishing. The scope includes all veneered plywood products intended for decorative applications in interiors.

Mandatory Compliance Requirements

Manufacturers must obtain BIS certification under IS 1328:1996. All veneered decorative plywood for domestic sale must carry the ISI mark, in line with Scheme-I of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Testing must be conducted in BIS-recognized laboratories.
