Notification

Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy forging stock and forgings have been notified under the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025, issued via S.O. 2021(E) dated 5 May 2025 under the BIS Act, 2016. This supersedes earlier QCOs of 2023 and 2024. Two corrigenda (S.O. 2682(E) and S.O. 2683(E)) were issued on 16 June 2025 to correct standard references and compliance timelines.

Enforcement Timeline

  • Large & Medium Enterprises: 1 October 2025
  • Small Enterprises: 1 January 2026
  • Micro Enterprises: 1 April 2026

Overview

Aluminium forgings are widely used in engineering, defence, automotive, and aerospace industries due to their lightweight strength and corrosion resistance. Given their critical role in high-performance applications, product reliability is ensured only through standardization. IS 734:1975 provides detailed requirements for wrought aluminium forging stock and forgings, which are now made mandatory under the 2025 QCO.

Objective & Scope

The standard regulates the quality of aluminium forgings by prescribing requirements on:

  • chemical composition,
  • mechanical strength,
  • tolerances,
  • microstructure.

Mandatory certification ensures defect-free forgings suitable for demanding engineering applications.

Products Covered

  • Wrought aluminium alloy forging stock
  • Wrought aluminium alloy forgings
for use in general engineering purposes.

Exemptions Provided

  • Products manufactured exclusively for export.
  • Imports up to 200 kg per manufacturer per year for R&D, provided they are not sold commercially, are scrapped after use, and records are maintained.

Industries Impacted

  • Forging Manufacturers – direct compliance responsibility.
  • Automotive & Aerospace Industries – using forged aluminium parts.
  • Engineering & Fabrication Units – structural and industrial components.
  • Defence & Heavy Engineering – critical forged components.

Mandatory Compliance Requirements

  • BIS certification under IS 734:1975 is mandatory.
  • All products must bear the ISI mark.
  • Licensing is covered under Scheme-I of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Next Steps for Stakeholders

  • File applications for BIS certification immediately.
  • Conduct mandatory testing in BIS-recognized labs.
  • Update packaging and invoices with ISI mark.
  • Declare exempted R&D imports where applicable.

Legal Provisions, Enforcement & Penalties

Enforcement under the BIS Act, 2016 includes inspections, certification control, and penalties.
Non-compliance leads to product seizure, cancellation of license, fines, and imprisonment (up to 2 years).

Conclusion

From 1 October 2025, IS 734:1975 becomes mandatory for large/medium enterprises, with small enterprises following from 1 January 2026 and micro enterprises from 1 April 2026. The Aluminium QCO 2025 replaces earlier QCOs and ensures standardization of aluminium forgings for safer and more reliable engineering use.
