The product Tables and Desks falls under the regulatory scope of the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, notified by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry through S.O. 801(E) dated 13 February 2025. The applicable Indian Standard is IS 17633:2022. This standard becomes mandatory for all manufacturers from 13 February 2026, with a grace period until 13 August 2026 for eligible Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) as defined under the MSME Development Act, 2006.+

Objective & Scope

IS 17633:2022 outlines the performance, safety, and dimensional specifications for a wide range of tables and desks. The goal is to ensure these products meet minimum requirements of load-bearing, stability, and ergonomic utility across diverse end-use scenarios including commercial and residential use.

Products Covered

This standard applies to tables and desks of various designs and sizes intended for general use in homes, educational institutions, offices, government buildings, and other indoor environments. It includes writing desks, work tables, dining tables, and multi-purpose flat-surfaced furniture designed for seating interaction.

Exemptions Provided

The following exemptions apply:

  • Products manufactured exclusively for export.
  • Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) registered on the Udyam Portal are exempt until 13 August 2026, provided:
    1. Investment in plant and machinery does not exceed ₹25 lakh,
    2. Turnover in the previous financial year does not exceed ₹2 crore (as certified by a Chartered Accountant).
