Massage Appliances have been notified under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025, via S.O. 2232(E) dated 19 May 2025 under the BIS Act, 2016. This QCO supersedes the previous S.O. 4098(E) issued in 2024 and enforces mandatory BIS certification for massage devices sold in the Indian market.

Given their electrical components and direct body contact, they pose potential safety risks like overheating, electrical shock, or mechanical failure. The QCO seeks to eliminate substandard products and ensure user safety.

The primary goal is to regulate the design and safety of electric massage appliances under IS 302 (Part 1):2024, which outlines norms for electrical insulation, protection against mechanical hazards, overheating, and moisture ingress.
