 Malleable cast iron pipe fittings have been notified under the Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, issued via S.O. 2287(E) dated 13 June 2024 under the BIS Act, 2016; this supersedes the 2023 QCO (S.O. 3806(E) dated 24 August 2023).

Enforcement Timeline

 Compliance deadlines are phased:

  • All Manufacturers (General) – 1 September 2024
  • Small Enterprises – 1 December 2024
  • Micro Enterprises – 1 March 2025

Overview

Malleable CI fittings are widely used in plumbing, gas, fire-protection and utility piping. Reliable dimensions and mechanical properties are critical for leak-free assembly and safety.

Objective & Scope

 The QCO mandates BIS certification and ISI marking so fittings conform to IS 1879:2010, covering material quality, dimensions, threads, pressure integrity and workmanship for consistent performance and interoperability.

 All malleable cast iron pipe fittings falling under IS 1879:2010.

Exemptions Provided

 (1) Goods manufactured domestically for export; (2) Domestic manufacturers registered on Udyam with ≤ ₹25 lakh plant & machinery/equipment (original cost) and ≤ ₹2 crore turnover (previous FY), CA-certified; (3) R&D imports up to 200 kg/year by manufacturers (not for sale; to be scrapped; year-wise records to Government).
