Notification
Commercial Electric Hoods are covered under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025, notified via S.O. 2232(E) dated 19 May 2025 under the BIS Act, 2016. This supersedes the earlier QCO notified via S.O. 4098(E) on 17 Sept 2024.
Overview
Commercial electric hoods are essential ventilation and grease-extraction systems used over cooking ranges in restaurants, hotels and institutional kitchens. Because they operate in high-heat, grease-laden environments, they must meet robust electrical, fire-safety, thermal and mechanical standards to prevent hazards and ensure effective ventilation.
Objective & Scope
The QCO mandates conformance to IS 302 (Part 1):2024, covering electrical insulation, earthing, ingress protection (where applicable), fan/motor safety, heat and grease resistance of materials, wiring and cable safety, and instructions/labeling for safe installation and maintenance.
Products Covered
- Canopy/extraction hoods for commercial kitchens
- Recirculating/ductless hoods with filters and fans
- Integrated hood-vent systems with motors, controls and lighting
- Units rated ≤250V AC (single-phase) or ≤480V DC/three-phase as applicable
Exemptions Provided
- Appliances manufactured solely for export
- Imports for research & development (limited to 200 units per year, not for commercial sale)
- Declared pre-enforcement stock (Schedule A) may be sold for up to six months after implementation
Industries Impacted
- Commercial kitchen equipment OEMs and fabricators
- Restaurant chains, cloud kitchens and institutional caterers
- HVAC and kitchen ventilation installers and specifiers
Mandatory Compliance Requirements
- Obtain BIS licence under Scheme-I and apply the ISI mark per BIS rules
- Submit samples to BIS-recognised laboratories for testing to IS 302 (Part 1):2024 requirements
- Provide proper user/instruction manuals, marking, and factory/quality records for audits
Enforcement Timeline
- Large & Medium Enterprises: 19 March 2026
- Small Enterprises: 19 June 2026
- Micro Enterprises: 19 September 2026
Next Steps for Stakeholders
- Start BIS application and technical dossier preparation now.
- Arrange prototype/sample testing (motors, electrical safety, temperature rise, material resistance).
- Update product labels, packaging and manuals to include ISI mark and required declarations.
- Declare any non-marked inventory under Schedule A to permit legal clearance within the allowed period.
Legal Provisions, Enforcement & Penalties
The BIS will enforce the regulation under the BIS Act, 2016.
Penalties for non-compliance include:
- Seizure of unmarked/non-compliant stock
- Suspension or cancellation of the license
- Fines and/or imprisonment up to 2 years, or both
Conclusion
Effective 19 March 2026, commercial electric hoods must meet IS 302 (Part 1):2024 and be BIS-certified with ISI marking. This strengthens kitchen safety, reduces fire and electrical risks, and aligns ventilation equipment with national standards — stakeholders should begin certification and product readiness now to avoid supply disruption and enforcement action.
