Cast iron and ductile iron drainage pipes and fittings (socket and spigot series) have been notified under the Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, issued through S.O. 2287(E) dated 13 June 2024 by DPIIT under the BIS Act, 2016. This supersedes the earlier 2023 QCO (S.O. 3806(E) dated 24 August 2023).
Enforcement Timeline
 Compliance deadlines are phased:
- All Manufacturers (General) – 1 September 2024
- Small Enterprises – 1 December 2024
- Micro Enterprises – 1 March 2025
Overview
 These pipes and fittings are widely used in drainage, sewerage, and industrial wastewater systems. Their performance impacts public health, infrastructure durability, and safety.
Objective & Scope
IS 1729:2002 specifies dimensional, mechanical, and performance requirements for CI/DI drainage pipes and fittings in socket-and-spigot design. It ensures durability, corrosion resistance, and standardized connections in non-pressure applications.

 All cast iron and ductile iron drainage pipes and fittings of the socket and spigot series, manufactured and sold in India.
Exemptions Provided
 Exemptions under the QCO include:
- Goods manufactured exclusively for export,
- Very-small Udyam-registered units with ≤ ₹25 lakh plant/machinery investment and ≤ ₹2 crore turnover (previous FY), supported by a Chartered Accountant’s certificate,
- Imports for R&D up to 200 kg/year, subject to scrapping after use and record-keeping.
