The product Bunk Beds is regulated under the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry through S.O. 801(E) dated 13 February 2025. The applicable Indian Standard is IS 17636:2022. The order mandates BIS certification for all manufacturers from 13 February 2026, with an extended deadline of 13 August 2026 for eligible Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) as defined under the MSME Act.

Bunk beds are commonly used in shared sleeping arrangements where space optimization is essential. Found in hostels, dormitories, homes, and institutional accommodations, they must meet safety and durability standards to prevent accidents and ensure long-term usability.
Objective & Scope
IS 17636:2022 defines the minimum quality and safety specifications for bunk beds. The standard focuses on structural strength, load-bearing capacity, design safety (especially fall protection and stability), and durability in multi-user or confined environments.
Products Covered
This standard applies to bunk beds designed for indoor use in:
- Hostels and dormitories,
- Residential spaces (children’s rooms, compact apartments),
- Boarding schools and training centers,
- Staff quarters and bunk-style accommodations.
It includes wooden, metal, and composite frame constructions.
Exemptions Provided
The following exemptions apply:
- Products manufactured exclusively for export.
- Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) registered on the Udyam Portal are exempt until 13 August 2026, provided:
- Investment in plant and machinery does not exceed ₹25 lakh,
- Turnover in the previous financial year does not exceed ₹2 crore (as certified by a Chartered Accountant).
