Notification

Laptops, notebooks, and tablets are regulated under the Electronics and IT Goods CRS Orders, originally issued in 2012/2013 and later updated by the CRS 2021 Order (S.O. 1248(E), dated 18 March 2021) under the BIS Act, 2016. The CRS 2021 order became enforceable from 18 September 2021.

The CRS scheme was introduced to ensure that only safe, BIS-registered IT products are sold in India. IS 13252 (Part 1) provides essential safety requirements to prevent electrical hazards in computing devices.

Objective & Scope

The standard aims to protect consumers from risks like electric shock, overheating, and fire, while aligning Indian regulations with international safety benchmarks for IT equipment.

Products Covered

This standard applies to portable IT equipment, including laptops, notebooks, and tablet computers used by both individuals and businesses.

Exemptions Provided

  • Products manufactured solely for export,
  • R&D/development samples or prototypes,
  • Any items exempted via government notification.

Mandatory Compliance Requirements

From 18 September 2021, all covered devices must:

  • Conform to IS 13252 (Part 1):2010.
  • Obtain BIS registration under Scheme-II (CRS).
  • Display the BIS Standard Mark with registration number before sale or import.

  • CRS 2013 included laptops, notebooks, and tablets under compulsory registration.
